great read, technical and informational but understandable
This book is truly a masterpiece of non-fiction writing. Rarely does one come across a work on a topic that is as well-researched, thorough in scope, clearly-written, and well-organized as this."Apocalypse Delayed" is simply a comprehensive guide to everything one could possibly want to know about the Jehovah's Witnesses faith. It's organized into three broad sections, history, concepts/doctrines, and organization/community, with each section, in turn, broken down into numerous individual chapters. Mr. Penton is a fine writer, but to be clear, this is no rollicking narrative tale, and has very little literary flourish. It's simply a collection of useful, practical, and easily-accessible information on everything from which biblical theories inspired the religion's founder, Charles Taze Russell, to what working conditions are like in JW world headquarters in Brooklyn, to what exactly Witnesses believe about blood. Mr. Penton is an author who has a clear obsession with his topic, and a deep desire to provide the world with the most useful resource possible (the book even ends with an excellent appendix of mini-reviews on every other significant study of the Jehovah's Witnesses written to date). On this, he has more than succeeded.There's not much more to say beyond if you are remotely interested in the Jehovah's Witnesses, this book will answer any and all questions you could possibly have.My only criticisms are relatively minor: this book was originally published in the 1980s, and although the 2015 "third edition" does contain many important updates, some passages do feel somewhat dated, with the 1970s still often framed as if they were relatively recent, and of many of the quotes from Watchtower magazines pulled from issues run many decades ago, rather than more contemporary ones that surely make the same point (Watchtower is nothing if not deeply repetitive). Penton also occasionally has moments where he seems to presume the reader possesses a bit more pre-existing knowledge of the Witnesses than is probably reasonable, and there can be passing references to events or people the reader might wish to be explained in greater detail, rather than simply alluded to with language like "as would of course later be seen in the X scandal" or whatever.But overall, these are small quibbles with a book that is, as I said, a truly fantastic work of reference. Penton has done the world a service in providing a book whose legacy will surely last for ages among scholars of this fascinating religious movement.
